Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about DSR, Malaysian bank reference ranges, and how this tool works.
What is DSR (Debt Service Ratio)?
DSR is the percentage of your monthly income that goes toward servicing your debts. It's one of the main metrics Malaysian banks use to assess loan affordability.
How is DSR calculated?
DSR = (Total monthly debt commitments ÷ Gross monthly income) × 100. Commitments include home loans, car loans, personal loans, PTPTN repayments, and the minimum monthly amount on credit cards.
What DSR do Malaysian banks accept?
There is no single BNM DSR cap for every borrower. Banks use their own affordability rules; as a planning reference, below 60% is usually easier, 60–70% is already high, and above 70% is often difficult unless the rest of the file is strong.
Should I include my credit card debt in DSR?
Yes — include the monthly minimum payment, not the full outstanding balance. Banks typically estimate 5% of your outstanding credit card balance as your monthly commitment when assessing applications.
